Rorie, 2017 Graduate

Before coming to Mercy Canada, I was controlled by insecurity and fear. I never really knew my biological dad and his absence left an empty space that was hard to recognize. I was weighed down by anxiety, an addiction, self-harm, and other destructive behaviours. All the stresses of life culminated to a point where I tried to take my life. The emptiness felt palpable and I was scared. I didn’t really want to die; I just didn’t want to be anymore.

One day my sister told me about Mercy Canada as I was researching different treatment facilities for help, and I decided to apply. I was relieved to have an opportunity to sort out my life. Jesus was always with me throughout my life, of that I’m certain. But if it wasn’t for Mercy, I never would’ve understood the extent of God’s deep love for me.

During my time at Mercy, I learned so much about myself and my relationship with Jesus. Thanks to careful reflection and conversations with staff, I was able to dig deep and expose light on the dark places in my life. I learned practical ways to calm my nerves and how to better care for my needs. I also learned how to capture my negative thoughts and renew my mind with the truth of God’s Word.

Being at Mercy is the most challenging thing I’ve done in my life (especially considering my social anxiety), but God met me in beautiful ways to let me know I was meant to be there. I experienced what it’s like to have Christ work inside me, walking alongside me in my process. I know my destructive choices have been forgiven and love has covered me. I have a Father now. One that guides me, refines me, and defines me. He’s with me right now! I never thought I’d experience transformation, but I have—and I’m so glad I had the space to do it at Mercy Canada.

Life after Mercy has been everything I could’ve hoped for! I’m halfway through journalism school and feel ready to take on anything life may throw at me. I’ve continuously made healthy choices since graduation with the tools I learned, and with Jesus by my side I feel blessed!

I just want to say thank you to all supporters and friends of Mercy. Your kindness and generosity have completely changed my life! Because of people like you, young women have the opportunity for a second chance at life. Thank you for giving and believing in me!
