My name is Laura Lynn, and this is God’s story of how He made beauty out of my ashes. Growing up I experienced a lot of bullying, which led me to believe I was defined by my weight. I was also taught that my voice didn’t matter, and I was used and taken advantage of on many occasions. I took these experiences to heart and, as a result, they damaged my identity. I became consumed by the lie that because I had been a victim at one point, I still was. On the outside I seemed happy and bubbly, but on the inside I was struggling with an eating disorder, an addiction, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts and attempts.
After I was yet again admitted into the psych ward, my mom sat me down and explained I needed help beyond what she and my dad could provide. That’s when she suggested Mercy Canada, and I decided to begin the application process right away.
Being at Mercy was one of the hardest and scariest things I’ve ever had to do, but it was also the most valuable and exhilarating ride of my life! One of the most significant turning points for me at Mercy was gaining the ability to use my voice, which helped me start to become the person God created me to be. For years I believed my thoughts, opinions, and feelings didn’t matter, but I discovered that my voice does count and I can use it to set boundaries with others. I also learned how to care for my needs in healthier ways and to persevere even when every part of me tells me to quit. Today I know that I’m worthy of love, treasured, precious, valuable, beautiful, and fearfully and wonderfully made. I am God’s masterpiece. He didn’t make a mistake when He created me; I now know I’m meant to be here. I’m not a victim anymore. No, I’m a victor and I’m looking the future square in the face…and I’m not afraid!
Since graduating from Mercy, God has been so faithful in keeping my feet on the ground. Life hasn’t been perfect and there have been challenges, but Mercy equipped me with the tools I needed to face them head on. I know that I’m never alone—God is always with me and continues to guide me every second of the day, and for that I’m so grateful.
Thank you to all the supporters and friends of Mercy for giving me the opportunity to get the help I so desperately needed! Because of you, I was able to experience healing for all of me, which is something I never thought would be possible. There are no words to communicate how grateful I am and how blessed I’ve been by your generous heart.
